Alocasia Macrorrhiza, commonly known as Giant Taro or Elephant Ear, is a striking tropical plant recognised for its large, heart-shaped leaves.  Native to Southeast Asia,  it thrives in warm, humid environment and is favoured for its dramatic, lush appearance,  making it a popular choice for both gardens and indoor spaces. 

Mature size:  It is a large, herbaceous perennial, capable of growing from 1.5 to 3m tall and wide. 

Leaves :  The leaves are exceptionally large, heart-shaped and glossy with prominent veins.  They can reach to impressive sizes, sometimes exceeding 60cm in length and width. 

Colour:  Leaf color ranges from deep green to dark purple or may feature variegated patterns.

Growth Habit:  It has a clumping growth habit with multiple leaves emerging from a central rhizomes. 

Light:  Prefers bright, indirect sunlight to partial shade.  Avoid harsh, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. 

Temperatures and humidity:  Thrives in warm, humid conditions.  Can be grown indoors, especially in sunrooms or greenhouse with high humidity maintained.

Soil:  Requires well-draining,  fertile soil that retains moisture. 

Watering:  Requires regular watering, especially during warmer months to keep the soil consistently moist. 

Fertilizing:  Benefits from regular fertilisation during the growing season. 

Toxicity:  The Sap can be irritant and is toxic if ingested,  so it is best to keep the plant away from children and pets. 

Plant Uses:  It's a popular choice for adding a tropical touch to landscapes, as a statement plant in gardens  or as a striking indoor specimen. 

Pests:  Can be susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects.
