Poinciana Tree 5L pot "Delonix regia"

DESCRIPTIONS:

The Poinciana Tree, also known as the Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant Tree. It has a broad,  many branches Tree with fern-like leaves and showy red-orange flowers.  It can grow as tall as 12 metres high and has smooth, grey bark and feathery foliage which droop during the dry season.  It flowers profusely,  carrying showy red-orange blooms that appear around the time as the new leaves.  It produces long, leathery pods that splits  to reveal a number of seeds.

* Appearance:

The Poinciana Tree  has a flat crown and a trunk with smooth, pale brown or greyish bark.  Its leaves are twice-compound, with many small leaflets that are oblong or oval in shape.  The flowers are bright red-orange with five petals  and grow in clusters near the tips of the branches.   The tree also produces large,  flat, boomerang-shaped seed pods that turn dark brown or black when matured. 

*  Mature size:

The Poinciana Tree can grow up to 12m tall and 10m wide.

* Growing Conditions:

The prefers free draining,  sandy or loamy soil with pH of 6.5 - 7.  It can tolerate drought and salty conditions,  but doesn't like heavy or clay soil.   It flowers more when kept slightly dry.  But the flowers may drop during extended dry periods or cold conditions. 

*  How to Plant:

When planting a Poinciana tree, improve the soil with well composted manure or planting compost,  and make the hole at least twice the size of the pot.  Fertilise well with controlled release fertiliser  and a liquid  based product. 

*  Pruning:

Prune the tree to create a strong structure,  as the limbs can break in high winds.  Prune any major branches that are half the diameter of the trunk or below 8-12 feet from the ground in late March or early April.
