DESCRIPTIONS:

Calodendron Capense, commonly known as Cape Chestnut, is a semi-deciduous tree native to South Africa, known for its beautiful, fragrant, pink flowers that cover the tree in early summer and its shiny,  dark green foliage. 

Appearance:

*  It's a medium sized tree, reaching a height of 25 - 40 ft (8 to 12 meters high)

*  It has a smooth, light grey bark.

*  The leaves are glossy, deep green  and oval-shaped. 

*  In early summer, the tree is covered in showy pink flowers that are lightly fragrant. 

*  The flowers are borne in terminal panicles clusters. 

*  After flowering, the tree produces knobbly, olive-green capsules that split open to reveal shiny black seeds.

*  The tree has a rounded crown, and its branches are densely covered with foliage. 

Growth Habit:

*  It is a slow-growing tree

*  It can be semi-deciduous, meaning it may lose some leaves during winter, depending on the climate. 

*  It thrives in full sun and well drained soil. 

Cultivation :

*  It's suitable for use as a shade tree. 

*  It's important to protect young trees from frost and strong winds. 

*  It's best to plant it in a sunny, open position with rich, moist and well drained soil. 

Other Notable Features:

*  Despite its common name, Cape Chestnut is not closely related to true Chestnut (Castanea) or horse Chestnut (Aesculus) but is a member of the citrus family  (Rutaceae).

*  The flowers are attractive to bees.

*  The seeds are eaten by birds and monkeys. 

*  The tree is known for its beautiful shape and smooth grey bark. 

*  Mature trees often developed fluting at the base of the trunk. 

Distribution:

*  Native to a large area of Southeastern Africa, from the equatorial highlands of Kenya south through Tanzania,  Zimbabwe to the coastal forest from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town in South Africa.
